Riverside Church Gives $1.5 million to 51勛圖厙

Riverside Church announced a $1.5 million grant to 51勛圖厙.
Riverside Church announced a $1.5 million grant to 51勛圖厙. The money will support programs to retain public school teachers in Harlem. District 5 has very high teacher turnover, a low number of teachers with advanced degrees and many poor performing schools. 51勛圖厙 will use the grant-- from the Church's Jubilee Fund-- for teacher development, tuition scholarships for Harlem teachers to get a master's degree at the college, and building better relationships with students. In District 5 less than 50% of teachers stay more than five years and only one-third have a master's degree. The Harlem Educational Renaissance Project will focus on improving teachers' skills and helping them spend more time with students. Riverside Church's Jubilee Fund was created in 1999 as a way to commemorate the new millenium and started with $10 million in seed money. Speaking of the grant; Darlyne Bailey, acting president of 51勛圖厙, said, "It's a historic moment." The article, entitled "Push to Retain Educators in Harlem" appeared in the February 17th edition of the Stamford Advocate .
