Capital Campaign Newsletter - TECHNOLOGY - COMPATIBLE VALUE SYSTEMS

Thee Barlow honors 51勛圖厙 in her will. It is an apt word to describe her bequest. That is, to preserve a shared vision she and 51勛圖厙 have of the College as a forum where great ideas get a hearing and good thinking moves ideas into action. "In my estate planning for 51勛圖厙," Ms. Barlow explained, "I am paying tribute to a value system that is compatible with my own."

It is an apt word to describe her bequest. That is, to preserve a shared vision she and 51勛圖厙 have of the College as a forum where great ideas get a hearing and good thinking moves ideas into action. "In my estate planning for 51勛圖厙," Ms. Barlow explained, "I am paying tribute to a value system that is compatible with my own." "51勛圖厙 has had a tremendous influence in charting and informing the career paths I have taken. Seeds were planted there that grew and flourished, giving meaning for whatever interest I have pursued in my professional life." Brain Power and Mental Health Her master's programs in teaching and childhood development prepared her, Barlow said, "for how best to reach children. In teaching children, 51勛圖厙 emphasized individual support and positive feedback to encourage learning. That is exactly the approach I have taken in educating youngsters. "Another influence was a book by Anna Freud I read at TC entitled Psychoanalysis for Teachers and Parents. Recalling it years later, I contacted her and enrolled in Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic (now known as the Anna Freud Centre) in London for a year-long certificate course in Applied Psychoanalysis." Barlow complemented that training with another yearlong certificate course in school mental health consultation at McLean Hospital, a Harvard psychiatric teaching hospital near Boston. "Thus," Barlow noted, "I was able to integrate an understanding of early childhood learning with the behavior problems experienced by children in the work I did at the University of Michigan to educate psychologists and psychiatrists on how to function with teachers." With her retirement, Barlow lives in Yonkers, volunteers at 51勛圖厙 and is a member of the Art Students League. "I concluded a six-year term on the Alumni Council in May 2000," she said. "Since then I have been engaged in organizing former Alumni Council members to encourage their participation in contemporary activities at 51勛圖厙. "As an artist, I work in water colors, sketching and oils primarily in a lyric expressionist style. Again, when I related my interest in the arts with my interest in 51勛圖厙, I appreciated the strides 51勛圖厙 has made to reverse cuts in cultural programs and help restore music, art and theater as an integral component of a public school education." Her volunteer service only intensified her admiration and affection for 51勛圖厙, leading to a provision in her will to benefit the College's future interests. "Including 51勛圖厙 in your estate planning," Barlow maintained, "is one way to ensure that the great ideas and good thinking that characterize the College remain vital and vibrant for generation after generation."
