Computer Grading: Friend or Foe?

A Time Magazine article published on February 17, "When Computers Do The Grading," talked about a new computer software program, called E-Rater, that actually grades essays on the GMAT exam. The article raised the question as to whether or not writing can be graded in such a pre-formatted manner. David Schaafsma, Professor of English Education at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, Columbia University said no. He was quoted in the article and said it’s unlikely that machines will understand the human aspect of writing.
